目的
2
Objective
2
This study aims to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of global extreme precipitation and clarify its regional differences relative to annual total precipitation.
Methods
2
Based on hourly precipitation data from ERA5-Land for 1991—2024, the 95th and 99th percentiles of daily precipitation during the reference period (1991—2020) were calculated for each grid point as R95 and R99 thresholds. Annual total precipitation (PRCPTOT) and extreme precipitation indices R95p (annual precipitation exceeding the R95 threshold) and R99p (annual precipitation exceeding the R99 threshold) were then computed. Combined with the IPCC AR6 climate classification, linear trend analysis, Mann-Kendall test, Sen′s slope estimator, and Pettitt change-point test were applied to systematically analyze the spatial patterns, long-term trends, and abrupt changes of global extreme precipitation.
Results
2
1) Global extreme precipitation exhibits pronounced climate-zone dependence and strong spatial heterogeneity, with high values mainly concentrated in tropical climate zones and windward slopes of mountainous terrain. The spatial distribution of R95p generally corresponds to PRCPTOT, whereas R99p shows stronger local concentration. 2) Linear trend analysis indicates that in continental and polar climate regions, both total and extreme precipitation show mainly increasing trends, while in arid and semi-arid regions, decreasing trends dominate. In most tropical regions, extreme precipitation increases significantly even when total annual precipitation trends are insignificant or slightly declining. Temperate regions show complex patterns with increasing, decreasing, and relatively stable trends coexisting. Trend significance tests reveal that the enhancement of extreme precipitation is particularly pronounced near the equator. 3) Pettitt change-point analysis shows that extreme precipitation exhibits significant abrupt changes in more climate regions than total precipitation, with generally larger magnitudes. PRCPTOT shows an overall decline before and after the change points, while R95p and R99p both show increases, with R99p exhibiting the largest magnitude of change.
Conclusion
2
Extreme precipitation is more sensitive than annual total precipitation in reflecting structural changes of the hydrological cycle under global warming, with significant regional variations. In some regions, the increasing trends of extreme precipitation are not effectively reflected by total precipitation changes, highlighting the need for future climate risk assessments and hydrological studies to focus more on extreme precipitation variations.
